This is a great idea that is rendered well too. I don't think you need the nest; it would not add anything to the message or the composition. Call it a less is more thing.
I'm not a visual artist, but I like the idea of a nest. How does that light stand upright without it? Plus, it implies more "lift" to the bird. Either way, its really clever.
The first one's better only cause that light makes no sense the way the chain is depicted. It just comes out the bulb, which would never happen. I think I'd try one final depiction without that chain and then pull the final trigger on a decision.

RE: The Nest. To be sure, you'd have to draw it and check with and without. In my mind's eye, I like it with a nest.

The image was done entirely with a Wacom tablet. It was nice to do, but at the same time, I missed the pen and ink.

I like it better without the nest, the illu is cleaner, and I dont' think it needs it. It's faster understood too. Great illos, both of them!
In this case, go with your first instinct... without the nest the piece is more precise and less cluttered, they are both good though.

I think I've come to the point where I'm tired of working on the piece.
I put the chain on the egg because the egg itself is the socket into which the "bird" goes, hence, the chain to turn the light on...
I'm tired just thinking about it...
